Call for interest – CIHR’s Standing Committee on Institutes International
CIHR is seeking members for its new Standing Committee on Institutes. The committee will have a diverse membership made up of nationally and internationally recognized health research leaders who will provide advice and recommendations to Governing Council on matters related to Institutes.The committee will be composed of 7 to 10 members who will serve three-year terms. Update: Mitacs Accelerate Limited Funding Option - anticipated deadline April 25 International
Anticipated deadline to MITACS current offer of enhanced leveraging is April 25, 2022. This is a provisional deadline based on the current demand, and it could change in case of high demand. As a reminder, MITACS currently offers enhanced leveraging so that partner contributions are matched 3:1 by MITACS vs. the usual 1:1 match. Inaugural Robbins-Ollivier Award for Excellence in Equity International

Update to Alliance Option 2 Cost-Sharing Ratio International
As of February 18, 2022, Alliance Option 2 has been simplified to one single cost sharing ratio of 100% from NSERC for proposals involving partners from any sector (private, public or not-for-profit). This means that the requirement for partner organizations to commit 10% of the project’s cash budget, when partners from the private sector are involved, has been removed. This would not preclude additional cash investments being made by partners from any sector to increase the scope of the project where applicable. If you have any questions please contact ors@sfu.ca
MITACS Accelerate Internships (Limited Funding Option) - UPDATE International
MITACS is currently offering a time limited funding model for its Accelerate program. There is enhanced leveraging so that partner contributions are matched 3:1 by MITACS vs. the usual 1:1 match. Internal deadline for these applications is Friday, February 18, 2022, 5pm PST.
A life course approach to common NCD risk factor prevention and reduction International
The GACD seeks to fund collaborative, multidisciplinary and cross-cultural teams. The teams should include appropriate expertise in implementation research. Research should aim to improve health equity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) or among disadvantaged populations in high-income countries (HICs). The specific research setting requirements vary by funding agency. A webinar to provide guidance on applying for this call will be held in two identical sessions on February 7, 2022.

NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplements Program International
Please be advised that as of the 2021-2022 Discovery Grant Competition, the Discovery Accelerator Supplements (DAS) program will be suspended until further notice. Although no new DAS awards will be made, ongoing DAS awards will continue to be honored. This comes as NSERC re-directs the DAS budget to support investments in Discovery research and training awards, including the funded one-year extensions for Discovery Grants. NSERC will continue to monitor and assess the future role and objectives of the DAS program as it relates to NSERC's commitment to funding excellence in discovery research and training.

Discovery Grants COVID-19 with Funds Extension International
Grantees in the final funded year of their grant are part of the yearly cohort who will be offered the Discovery Grants COVID-19 extension with funds. Please be advised that eligible grantees for the COVID-19 with funds extension will receive communication directly from NSERC explaining that they will be sent a system-generated email from NSERC. This email will prompt you to access a secure website where you can accept or decline the funded extension. The deadline to submit your response to NSERC is September 15, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. (PST). Accepting this funded extension will automatically disqualify you from applying to this year's Discovery Grants competition. For grantees that hold a Northern Research Supplement, you will receive two invitations. You must either accept or decline both invitations from NSERC.
Discovery Horizons - LOI Deadline Updated International

Please be advised that NSERC has provided further information to Research Services regarding the Discovery Grant COVID-19 with Funds Extension for 2021. NSERC will prioritize and provide an extra year of funding to grant holders who received their last instalment in the 2021-2022 fiscal year (April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022). Eligible awardees will be notified directly by NSERC to accept or decline the extra year of funding. Please note the deadline to respond to NSERC's offer is September 15, 2021. Eligible awardees who accept NSERC's offer will receive their additional year of funding on or after April 1, 2022. Important message regarding research involving Cannabis International
Cannabis has been legalized in Canada for personal possession and use, but research with cannabis remains controlled. Any research projects that involve cannabis, CBD or THC compounds (regardless of quantity) require a research licence from Health Canada. Currently, Simon Fraser University does not have an institutional licence for research with cannabis. Proposed research projects involving cannabis should be submitted directly to Health Canada by individual Principal Investigators (PIs) as a personal research licence application by creating an Individual Account in the Cannabis Tracking and Licensing System (CTLS). The guideline for application is available at Cannabis Licensing Application Guide: Research (Health Canada) Once approved, provide a copy of your Cannabis License to Research Services (ors@sfu.ca) and the Environmental Health and Safety Department (cpeltier@sfu.ca).
CIHR Online Discussion on Systemic Racism International
On December 17, 2020, CIHR published a message from the Vice-President, Research Programs entitled Online discussion on systemic racism in Canada's health research funding system. The online discussion has launched and will be open until April 9, 2021. The content for the online discussion was developed in consultation with racialized and Indigenous researchers and stakeholder organizations. CIHR specifically invites the engagement of racialized and Indigenous communities with lived experience of systemic racism in the health research sector although the online discussion is open to all.
CIHR Institute Advisory Boards (IABs) International
CIHR has launched the 2021 IAB membership cycle. Applications will be accepted until April 12, 2021. Each of CIHR's 13 Institute Advisory Boards advises on Institute-specific issues and cross-Institute initiatives. Composed of a diverse group of national and international representatives of the public, private and non-profit sectors, including the research community and health practitioners, Institute Advisory Boards (IABs) act in an advisory capacity to the Scientific Directors of the Institutes with respect to the full range of Institute activities. These activities include deliberations on Institute health research priorities and strategies and implementation plans for engaging the broader research community. The number of members on an IAB is between eight and 14.
Trebek Council International
The Royal Canadian Geographical Society and the National Geographic Society are excited to launch a new granting initiative that will help ignite a 'passion to preserve' in all Canadians. The initiative is named in honour of Alex Trebek. The late, renowned host of Jeopardy! and philanthropist had a passion for geographic literacy and supported both The Royal Canadian Geographical Society (where he served as Honorary President until his passing) and the National Geographic Society. The Trebek Initiative plans to support 15 to 20 grantees annually with grants of $15,000 to $40,000. A formal launch of this grant program with the application portal will open in early May. A webinar and website providing application details and support for applicants will also launch in March. The Funding and Award Opportunities Team will provide more information as it becomes available.

American Chemical Society has announced a new proposal submission process for the Petroleum Research Fund. In December PRF moved to a new grants database. The new system is web based and will allow applicants and/or grants officers to enter the proposal information previously included in the downloaded forms directly through an online portal. NSERC has announced an important update to peer review meetings for the 2021 Discovery Grants competition. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, NSERC is taking action to ensure effective and timely delivery of the 2021 Discovery Grants competition by adjusting the in-person meeting component of the review to take place by video conference. NSERC recognizes the complexity associated with the organization of video conferences for the Discovery Grants peer review and plans to draw on expertise from other NSERC programs that have used video conferences successfully for many years. MSFHR is currently revamping their suite of funding programs including Scholar Awards, Convening & Collaborating (C2) Awards, Innovation to Commercialization (I2C) Awards, Reach Awards, and others. Anticipated launch dates for these competitions in the 2019 fiscal year are now available. Information about submission deadlines will be made available as soon as these competitions are launched.
