[Update] A brief summary of SSHRC Leader Meeting 2019

A brief update for 2019 SSHRC leaders meeting
- Budget
- Increased to help more students access graduate studies and improve EDI in the research system through Canada Graduate Scholarships.
- Increased to expand parental leaves from 6 to 12 months for students and post docs who are funded directly or indirectly by Agency funds.
- Priorities
- International, interdisciplinary, high-risk/high reward and rapid response research
- Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI): Principles are applied to all SSHRC programs to “develop inclusive culture needed for research excellence and to achieve outcomes that are rigorous, relevant and accessible to diverse populations”.
- Indigenous research and research training that contributes to reconciliation: co-developed, coordinated, connected to community.
- Development of early career researchers: enhanced feedback and peer review.
- Programs Updates
- Indigenous research capacity and reconciliation connection grants
- Talent development: Masters, Doctoral and Postdoctoral opportunities, focus on EDI and harmonized payment mechanisms across Agencies.
- Knowledge about people: Insight, Insight Development, support to institutions.
- Connection beyond academia: Connection, Knowledge Synthesis, support for journals. New eligibility requirement to advance Open Access; New stream to allow data management capacity building; Additional funding for innovative practice and using Canadian non-profit platforms in Aid to Scholarly Journals;
- Partnerships: Partnership Engage, Partnership Development. Partnership. Streamlining partnership evaluation but still 2 stage process.
- Joint initiatives: Defense Research Initiative; Sport Participation Research Initiative; Societal Implications of Genomics Research; Initiative for Digital Citizen Research; MITACS Accelerate
- Upcoming Future Challenges: Fall 2020 Working in the Digital Economy, Fall 2021 The Emerging Asocial Society.
