The Government of Canada has launched an open selection process to fill current and upcoming vacancies on the National Research Council’s Governing Council.

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) plays a unique role in Canada's science, technology and innovation system, undertaking large-scale, outcome-oriented and collaborative research programs that address science and innovation needs and opportunities for the country. It represents a significant asset for Canada, providing a national network of expert staff and a national system of well-developed research facilities and associated equipment that deliver world-class applied research and commercialization capacity in diverse areas of research and technology development. It has a rich 100-year history that includes the work of many Nobel Laureates and countless great technology success stories. Its Industrial Research Assistance Program is an internationally recognized program that supports thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises a year with innovation advice and financial assistance for commercialization.

In the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic, the NRC plays an important and active role in the Government of Canada’s pandemic response and support Canada’s economic recovery. At the same time, as Canada's largest federal research and development organization it works to adapt its approach to tackle the world's most pressing challenges, such as climate change, aging populations and economic crises, and to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the digital economy and disruptive technologies. Leveraging the NRC's excellence in research and innovation will result in continued contributions to national prosperity and the well-being of all Canadians.

The NRC is governed by a Governing Council which consists of the President, the Chairperson, and not more than 10 other members. The Council’s role is to provide strategic advice to the President and senior management. Specifically, members advise on strategic direction for the organization, review annual budgets and financial statements as well as advise on the appointment of senior officers.

The government is applying a rigorous approach to Governor in Council (GIC) appointments built on an open, transparent, and merit-based selection process‎. This approach reflects the fundamental role that Canadians play in our democracy as they serve on commissions, boards, Crown corporations, agencies, and tribunals across the country. It will result in the recommendation of high-quality candidates who truly reflect Canada’s diversity, and will bolster the confidence of Canadians in these important organizations.
