CFI Innovation Fund

The CFI Innovation Fund supports transformative infrastructure projects that underpin cutting-edge, globally competitive research. Its objectives are to enable global leadership by supporting world-class research or technology development; enhance and optimize the capacity of institutions and research communities to conduct the proposed research or technology development program(s); and will lead to social, health, environmental and/or economic benefits for Canadians.

Eligibility: Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals and non-profit research institutions recognized as eligible by the CFI — not individual researchers — may submit proposals to the CFI. Eligible requests can be for research infrastructure, or construction costs to build/renovate space for research activities.

Internal process: SFU researchers interested in applying for the 2022 CFI Innovation Fund (IF) competition, with SFU as the lead or as a partnering institution, are required to submit a two-page Internal Expression of Interest (iEOI) to the Institutional Strategic Awards Office (ISA) by February 28, 2021. This iEOI will be used to identify potential synergies between projects and determine the level of initial interest in this competition. It will not be used to determine who will or will not be moving forward in the competition.

ISA will host a Zoom information session about the internal process on January 27, from noon to 1 p.m. All SFU faculty planning to participate in Innovation Fund proposals led by SFU or by another institution are encouraged to join. Please email isa@sfu.ca to register and receive the meeting link.

Timeline:

  • Feb 28, 2021: Internal Expressions of Interest (iEOI) due*

  • Mar-May 2021: Mandatory participation in workshops

  • Jul 2021 (date TBD): Internal Notice of Intent (iNOI) due to ISA

  • Aug 2021: Critical review & internal selection of iNOIs

  • Sept-Nov 2021: Anticipated CFI IF 2022 Call for Proposals
